Well Done Sam from all the Ladies

The Ladies Section congratulate Ranfurly Castle’s Sam Binning who beat Scott Young of Turnhouse and Ewan Scott (St Andrews)after a dramatic play-off yesterday (Thursday) that earned him a place in the sun … an all-expenses-paid trip to Brazil next month to be precise.

The five players to top their categories in the Nick Faldo Series Scottish Final over 36 holes of the Renaissance Club course at Archerfield Links today gained automatic places in the Grand Final, to be held at Itanhanga Golf Club, Rio de Janeiro.
Sam forced a play-off with Adam Dunton (McDonald Ellon), the overnight leader in the boys’ Under-21 section with a second round of 74 for 153. Dunton had scores of 76 and 77 and Binning completed his joy with a winning birdie 2 at the short hole chosen to start the sudden-death shoot-out for a seat on the plane to Brazil.

WELL DONE SAM FROM ALL IN THE LADIES SECTION AT RANFURLY CASTLE

Ladies Club Champion 2009-Natasha Qayum

Natash Qayum amd Marion Munro - click to enlarge Natasha and Marion - Click to enlarge

Congratulations to Natasha who won her 1st Club Championship, beating Marion Munro in today's Final.
Those who walked round with the girls would be reminded of the quality of play required at this level. The margin of error is slim, and when it happens, it can be cruel.
The weather turned nasty from the 9th onwards, with Natasha winning on the 14th.
And so with the brolleys up and heads down, we returned to the clubhouse, where tea was poured for some, and others? Well deserved glasses of wine! ( and maybe a coke)
Club Captain Douglas Martin presented Junior, Senior and Club Prizes and Lady Captain Helen Abram announced Natasha as our our new Club Champion!
Very well done Natasha and Marion and thanks to all the supporters.

Judge Quaich --- Friday 21st August

Junior Girls - Click to enlarge
This year's competition was narrowly won by the boys. 7 junior girls made up the team. It was decided that we would have 2 singles over 12 holes (due weather concerns) 1 single over 6 holes and two foursome matches also over 6 holes. As the weather deteriorated these games were cut to 4 holes.
However, it was great afterwards to see the lounge so busy with our juniors, enjoying the food and hearing the laughter that only busy tables of youngsters can produce.!
During the evening the Judge Quaich was presented to Ben Adamson who gave a short vote of thanks. Well done Ben!
My thanks to all who took part, the girls were Natasha and Alexandra Qayum, April Paterson, Jane McCabe, Beth Satterwaithe, Gwen Gillham and Karen Priestly and thanks to John Kerr for his help and support.

GREENLEES TEAM HAS GOOD WIN AGAINST CATHKIN BRAES

The Greenlees Team won 5 - 4 today at Ranfurly against a Cathkin Braes team containing many experienced match players. It was always going to be hard for the girls at the front of the team and they put up a good fight but it was the back of the team that brought in the points.
The match was sitting finely balanced at 4 - 4 and awaiting the result of Helen Craig's game. Helen got a big cheer from her Ranfurly team mates when it was heard that she had won her match on the 18th to make the result an overall victory for Ranfurly Castle.

Ranfurly Castle win Junior Club of the Year Award

Ranfurly Castle were crowned the winners of the Junior Club of the Year Award announced at last Friday’s Scottish Golf Dinner in Glasgow after a tight title race with five other short listed clubs.

Launched last year the award is designed to reward clubs for their efforts in promoting junior golf and encouraging more juniors into the game. Alford Golf Club claimed the inaugural title setting a high benchmark for this year’s hopefuls.

Ranfurly Castle proved they were the cream of the crop from a starting field of 29 clubs from across Scotland, finally whittled down to a short list of six clubs. Representatives from Powfoot, Duns, Kirkintilloch, Palacerigg and Stranraer golf clubs were among the audience as the announcement was made at the dinner - held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel - and as runners-up received £300 to help continue their fantastic work developing their junior golf programmes.

The Renfrewshire club was rewarded with a cheque for £1,000 from the Scottish Golf Union and clubgolf, the national junior golf programme, to be invested in their junior programme. The winner’s prize also includes two spots in a European Tour pro-am, playing alongside a leading professional golfer.

The club’s pro-active approach was highlighted through their efforts to increase accessibility for juniors coming into the game. A £25,000 Lottery grant was invested in improvements to their 9 hole Clevans course, and as part of the project the club made that facility available to the local community, earning accolades from Renfrewshire District Council and local MSPs and MPs.

Renfrewshire remains the only authority in Scotland that is not rolling out the introductory game “firstclubgolf” in schools, however Ranfurly Castle has embraced the clubgolf programme by putting no fewer than 11 volunteers through the Stage 1 coaching course. That has allowed the club to open up golf coaching to non-members, and positions them well to link to local primary schools should they join up with the national junior golf programme in the future.

For existing junior club members it was recognised that there were insufficient competitions and, as part of an overall strategy of integrating them in the club to give juniors a greater sense of belonging, those with single figure handicaps were allowed to play in the vast majority of senior men’s competitions.

The reward for encouraging that increased competitiveness came when, after a 14 year absence, the club beat the previous year’s winners Greenock in the final of The Junior Newton Shield, the area team championship for the Renfrewshire Golf Union. Of a total of 31 junior boys selected for the Renfrewshire Golf Union coaching squads, six are from Ranfurly Castle, while it also provided five of the nine Renfrewshire junior golfers selected for the SGU Coaching Academy.

clubgolf Project Manager Torquil McInroy said, “Ranfurly Golf Club demonstrated real drive, as well as their ability and desire to promote golf to youngsters in their community.

“They are a great example to other clubs and this award is recognition of the hard work carried out by their volunteers. In establishing the infrastructure which will underpin their continued success in the years ahead, they worked as a team to show what can be achieved.”

McInroy who was on the judging panel added, “The response to the awards in its second year was again very encouraging and I would like to thank all of those who entered this year. Those who were short listed demonstrated just a sample of some of the great work which is being undertaken by clubs across the country. That work is vital for the health and future of the game and long may it continue.”

Ranfurly Castle’s Junior Convenor Michael McCabe and Club Captain Douglas Martin, who received the cheque for £1,000 to contribute to their junior programmes said after the presentation, “We are absolutely delighted to win this award which is great recognition of our activity here and will enable us to continue to deliver great coaching and improved facilities and boost participation numbers among juniors in the game.”

The Ladies Section congratulate Michael McCabe and their team on this marvellous award

SLGA New Foursomes Matchplay Event

Kirkwood Golf New club match-play foursomes event
added to SLGA calendar

The Scottish foursomes tournament has not been well supported over the last few years, and was cancelled last summer due to lack of entries.
Dr Lynne Terry (Cruden Bay), the SLGA treasurer, came up with a suggestion for an inter-club match-play foursomes handicap tournament which could be run over the summer with semi-finals and final on the same day as the Scottish stroke-play foursomes tournament (August 30 at Forfar Golf Club) with scratch and handicap prizes.
Each club can enter a team of two or three players to represent it during the season. The total combined handicaps of the team must not exceed 60. Any two of the team can represent the club in each round.
Each match will be played on the basis of full difference of half the combined handicaps (on the day) of the two players representing the club.
The SLGA will make the draw for each round. The rounds will be based on geographical locations of the clubs to minimise travel as far as possible.
The 18-hole stroke-play tournament on the finals day will prioritise the 16 lowest combined handicaps, along with additional entries from the clubs involved in the semi-finals and the clubs that entered the match play.
If the event is not fully subscribed then clubs who did not enter the match play can enter, and if it is over-subscribed then higher handicap teams will be eliminated first.
Entry forms went out to the clubs with last week's mailing from the SLGA.

The annual mailing to Ladies' Handicap Secretaries was sent to clubs on 18 February. Included are:

Entry form for the NEW Foursomes Match Play Competition - please note the closing date for entries is 9th March so enter your club now to avoid disappointment
Annual Handicap Pack - the list of qualifying competitions for 2009 may also be downloaded here

Bridge Cards59 people braved the weather forecast and made their way to the clubhouse last night for a very enjoyable evening, playing a form of Chicago with duplicate scoring. 15 tables were split between the two lounges. Lucky chair prizes went to Mabel Smith and Lilias Snodgrass.
Thanks to Mary Hardie and Jan McNab who helped with the tea, and of course Nicola and her team behind the bar , the members of Bridge of Weir Bridge Club for the use of their tables, and those club members who allowed us to borrow their tables.
Finally a big thank you to those who took part, support which is always appreciated.
