BREAKFAST ON 3rd JANUARY

Ladies, just a little reminder that everyone is invited to come to the Club on 3rd January 2020 for breakfast, a chat and, maybe, a little golf if wanted.  Time is 10.00-10.15am.
It would be helpful if you could contact Joy before hand if you plan to come along, but don't worry if that is not possible.  Looking forward to seeing anyone who is free for a catch up and a Happy New Year to you all when it comes.

XMAS FUN!

There might not have been any golf because of the heavy rain but, great fun was had playing the entertaining quiz organised by Jan.  Everyone turned up in Festive dress - the jumper sales must have increased this year - but Anne Judge decided that a Xmas jumper was not nearly good enough as can be seen from the following photo.  Well done Anne!

Golf Teams of 3 were joined by ladies who had not intended to play golf anyway, but were prepared to put their general knowledge to the test.  No horrible head scratching questions this year, just a range of topics with plenty of possible answers for all the team to contribute to.   The overal winning team was decided by playing Family Fortunes and consisted of  Sheila Biggart, Evelyn MacDermid and Morag Cunningham - congratulations all.
40 Ladies then enjoyed lunch and chat upstairs, perhaps the first mince pie of the season for many of us, along with coffee or tea, rounded off the occasion.

NO GOLF THIS MORNING

Predictably, the weather is not pleasant for golf this morning.

We will revert to Plan B and meet at 11.15am prior to our Christmas Lunch.

If the weather dries up this afternoon, anyone feeling they have missed out on their golf can always have a few holes after lunch.

See you all later

LADIES DINNER

On Wednesday 23rd October 43 ladies enjoyed a lovely evening at the annual dinner.  Despite all the disruptive work being carried out fitting new windows in both the smoke room and mixed lounge, Simon, Mandy and their team coped amazingly. No one would have known how the room had looked only a couple of hours before everyone arrived! Judging by the noise level, everyone had a good time.
Jan welcomed everyone and presented the Fun Competition prizes before giving a little explanation of how she proposes to run the Ladies Section next season in light of the fact that there is no Vice Captain to take over in January.
As usual Jean Irvine has taken a very good selection of photos of the evening.

FAREWELL TO TOM ECKFORD

Ladies, as you know, Tom will be leaving the Pro Shop at the end of the month after 25 years at Ranfurly Castle.

Next Wednesday 25th September will be the final Wednesday we see him in the Pro Shop when we check-in for a Ladies Competition (it will be the rearranged McLachlan Cup - weather permitting).

To mark the occasion, I have invited Tom to come up and join the ladies for lunch after we play so we can all say goodbye and thank you.

It would therefore be lovely to see as many of you as possible there for lunch on Wednesday, even if you are not playing in the competition.

I will see you there!

The better weather seemed to bring out some good golf as the scores were generally very high.

COUNTY ROSEBOWL FINAL AT GLEDDOCH

Ladies I feel slightly awkward blogging this, as it is a bit like blowing your own trumpet, but I felt you would all like to know that I played in the County Rosebowl final this afternoon and won 3&1.

The final was held at Gleddoch, arranged and refereed by County Captain June Lockhart who is a member there. My opponent was Linda MacDougall (Greenock and Kilmacolm), handicap 7 so I received 3 shots. It was a good match - I felt that I was hitting better iron shots to greens but Linda's putting was outstanding, 12 footers were practically gimmes, until she finally missed one by a whisker at the 15th.

I managed to get to 4 up after 10 holes, then Linda had 3 birdies in the next 5 holes! The match was finally over at the (pretty muddy) 17th where, after we both had to get a free drop to play our second shots, I finally holed a long putt for a birdie 4. Huge thanks to Sheila for coming to caddy for me, listening to my witterings about which irons to play and generally being a big encouragement.

I am absolutely delighted to win the trophy again for Ranfurly Castle - looking back at the trophy there have been 6 Ranfurly winners in the last 8 years - starting in 2012 with Iona Stephen (now a big-time Sky Sports presenter hobnobbing with the Solheim Cup girls but back then a Ranfurly Castle mere mortal!), then Denise won three years in a row (wow)  and last year Anne Judge won at Cathcart Castle. Whose turn could it be next year??

MCLACHLAN CUP - POSTPONED

CLUB FINALS DAY 2019

On Saturday 24th August the Club Championship Finals were played in beautiful sunny conditions which was a huge relief to all concerned!  In the week leading up to this, several semi finals were still to be played, due to the poor weather.  It was by no means certain that all games could be completed in time and 2 couples were out on the course until 9pm on Friday night to ensure that the Worpleston Trophy final could take place.

The Ladies Championship final was between Jan Macnab and Denise Cowan.  22 club members followed the game, supporting both parties, but after a very close fought match, Denise was the winner on the 17th green.  The two caddies - Anne Robinson and Maureen Cook - did a wonderful job keeping the ladies calm and ensuring a good match.

The Worplesdon final was between Marion and Stuart Munro and Marissa Barr and Stephen Thomson with Marissa and Stephen taking the Trophy.

The Trophies were presented by Captain David Stewart.

LADIES INVITATION DAY 2019

The Ladies Invitation Day was played, at the second time of asking, on Friday 23rd August.

Unfortunately some of the ladies who planned to bring a guest and play on the original date were unable to make it, but those who came along all enjoyed the greensomes format and a dry, if windy, day.

The winners were Sheila Biggart and her guest Nicky Stirrup from Kilmacolm with 36 points.

Runners-up were Anne Judge and Margaret Gray from Old Ranfurly with 35 points.

Nearest the pin at 7th - Eileen Walker
Nearest the pin at 14th - Sheila Biggart
Longest drive silver - Carol Smith
Longest drive bronze - Joy McLeod

Many thanks to Vicky Rennie and Nancy MacGadie for all their hard work arranging (and rearranging) the day, to Maureen Cook and Joy McLeod for donating some of the prizes and to Jean Irvine for ensuring the clubhouse looked beautiful with various flower arrangements throughout.

LADIES OUTING 2019

Thanks to Marion Munro for organising the successful annual Ladies Outing to Hilton Park on Wednesday 21st August. 24 ladies enjoyed hot rolls before play, 18 holes (in most cases) and a two course meal when we came in. There was enough dry weather for everyone to enjoy at least some of their golf, although by the end it was a bit miserable particularly for the later starters.

The Allander Course provided lovely views, was not too long (although quite hilly in places!) and had the advantage of coming back to the clubhouse after 9 holes.

The winners were Jan Macnab, Rosemary Ogilvy and Cynthia Keanie with 52 pts,

Runners up Agnes Williamson, Joy McLeod and Pamela MacKenzie with 49 pts

and Jean Murray holed the longest putt on the 9th green - 141 inches!

FINALS DAY 2019

HALDEN CUP SUNDAY 18TH AUGUST 2019

This Sunday's Halden Cup match - the annual match where the Lady Captain's team plays the Gents Captain's team - was another victim of this extremely wet August.

There was a delayed start and some matches played over a reduced number of holes but we were able to go ahead, after Captain David was to be seen out squeegeeing the 18th green personally!
All the matches were played in a great spirit and everyone seemed to enjoy the less formal buffet-style lunch judging by all the noisy chat filling the dining room.
The overall match result was a Draw which seemed very fair in the conditions.

Thanks to all the ladies who played, from the rookies enjoying their first taste of this fierce competition to the stalwarts who turn out every year having had their arms twisted! I appreciated your support.

POOH PUTTER

Wednesday 14th August was the annual match between the Captain's team and the Vice Captain's team for the Pooh Putter. This year was slightly different and it was a Past Captain's team that took on the challenge.  Sadly the weather was rather wet, so the competition was reduced to 10 holes and the result was a resounding win for the Captain's team.
It was good to see so many ladies enjoying lunch and the chat afterwards.

CORONATION FOURSOMES AREA FINAL

Jan Macnab and Sheila Biggart represented Ranfurly Castle at the Coronation Foursomes area final at West Linton on Thursday 8th August.

The girls have not made it to the Grand Final at St Andrews this year but finished a very respectable 4th out of 66 competitor pairs, with 36 points. The top three couples all had 38 points.

REARRANGED LADIES INVITATION DAY

After the terrible weather last Friday led to the postponement of this event, the new date for the Ladies Invitation Greensomes is Friday 23rd August.

A revised entry sheet will be put up in the Locker Room. Most players have been contacted and retain their original start times. Unfortunately the changed date means some ladies are now not able to play and their entry money will be refunded in due course.

There are spaces available if you were not able to play on Friday 9th but would like to get a partner and play on 23rd. Please just add your name to the sheet or contact Jan Macnab or Nancy MacGadie.

GREENLEES MATCH AT MILNGAVIE

The final away match of the season was played at Milngavie on Monday 5th August. Despite having to sit in the car for 10 minutes when we arrived because of the torrential downpour, amazingly the rain then stayed away for the duration of the match. Current league leaders Milngavie won 7-2, a not unexpected result, but with some close matches. Two halves and another win for Mary C at the end of the team. Well done!

EX LADY CAPTAINS' DAY

21 former Ranfurly Castle Lady Captains played a 12-Hole Stableford Tri-Am today, Friday 19th July 2019, on what turned out to be a pleasant, sunny morning. The golf winners were Vivien Howe, Helen Abram and Marjorie Mitchell (32 points) and Runners-up (after a close count-back) were Anne Judge, Carol Fell and Alison Robertson (30 points).

These ladies then joined me and 3 other past Lady Captains for lunch in the dining room. This appeared to be enjoyed by all, if the volume of the chat was anything to go by! Joy McLeod and Evelyn McDermid won prizes with their lucky tickets.

Nancy MacGadie collected the beautiful begonia plant which she had won in the raffle on the Ladies Open day.

Thanks to Pamela MacKenzie for her help organising the day and Jean Irvine for taking photos.

GREENLEES MATCH AT PRESTWICK ST NICHOLAS

The Greenlees team had a horrid time at Prestwick St Nicholas on Friday 5th July. Prestwick were feeling the pressure to win points as 3 of their top 4 players had not been available for any of their previous matches. Needless to say, they all turned out against Ranfurly Castle. The predominantly single-figure handicap opposition, the tricky away course, the howling wind and the lashing rain all made it an afternoon we would like to forget and an 8-1 defeat, while disappointing, was not a huge surprise. Many were slightly cheered up however by the delicious catering provided afterwards.

Onwards to the next game! We had an 8-1 defeat last year and still managed to finish mid-table so we must all keep our hopes and spirits up.

HOLE IN ONE!!

Hole in one!

Many congratulations to Claire Provan who had a hole in one at the 14th while playing in Tom Eckfords Pro-Am day on Friday 28th June.
Well done Claire!

WEST RENFREWSHIRE LEAGUE V CALDWELL

Tuesday night, 25th June, was the final match of the West Renfrewshire League season, having been rearranged from last month due to a flooded course.

The match was a very competitive one with Caldwell, who have seen some new ladies join from Beith Golf Club and renewed vigorous determination from their captain and players, since we last had an easy home victory over them two years ago! I am pleased to report that the team managed to win 3.5/2.5 but it was a nail-biting finish with Mary H coming in with the crucial half in the final game in.

This result will ensure the team remains in Division 1 for next year, even though the final position is not yet know with other clubs still having matches to play.

Thanks to Vivien Howe for arranging (and rearranging!) the matches this year and to all the ladies who have played - Jan, Vivien, Agnes, Lilias, Louise, Helen A, Mary H, Joy, Gillian and Morag.

GREENLEES MATCH V WEST KILBRIDE

Monday 24th June was the day for the Greenlees team's 3rd home game of the season and also the worst weather forecast of the year, with thundery showers threatened.

As it turned out there were thundery rumblings and one flash of lightning before the threat cleared away and most games were able to finish, albeit getting rather wet. This was much to team captain Anne Judge's relief as rearranging these games is almost impossible.

The team managed a good 6-3 win against a West Kilbride team that included many old friends, including Helen Craig.

Next up is Prestwick St Nicholas (away) on Friday 5th July. That will be a tough challenge!

WOMEN'S MEDAL GRAND FINAL

Jan Macnab and Helen Abram represented Ranfurly Castle yesterday at the Scottish Golf Women's Medal Grand Final. Both had qualified for this last month playing at East Renfrewshire Golf Club.
The Grand Final was played on the Eden Course, St Andrews, on a day where the rain stayed away to let Helen finish but absolutely soaked Jan at the 17th!
No prizes for the girls but very respectable buffer zone scores for both (Helen 73, Jan 74) which placed them in the top third of competitors. The CSS was 72 with Silver Division won by a 68 and Bronze won by a staggering 62 from Margaret Adams of Gleddoch.
