RLCGA WINTER FOURSOMES

Congratulations to Anne and Marion who won the Renfrewshire Ladies Winter Foursomes final today at Kilmacolm GC.

It was a beautiful, sunny day and Anne and Marion beat Fiona Cameron and Jane Gravil (Cowglen) 4&3, playing very well and especially showcasing (not surprising) excellent short-game skills.

Well done, a great start to the season for the Ranfurly Castle ladies.

LESLEY IS WEST SENIORS' CHAMPION

Huge congratulations to Lesley Robertson who won the West of Scotland Seniors Championship at Renfrew Golf Club yesterday. This was Lesley's first time competing in the Championship - starting as she means to go on!
In the final on Thursday afternoon, she beat Lesley Lloyd (Lanarkshire) 4&2 in an impressive display of golf, especially in the tricky conditions faced everywhere due to the prolonged dry spell of weather.

Well done Lesley, from all of us at Ranfurly Castle.

RLCGA COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

Many congratulations to Jan who had the lowest net score of 68 in Wednesday's qualifying round at Cathcart Castle. There were 53 Ladies playing in the County Championship Qualifier and Jan has now won the Peggy Clark Cup.

In Friday's Championship final, the 12 year old golfing sensation Sabrina Wong from Cathkin Braes beat Jennifer Rankine in an amazing match in which the girls made 9 birdies between them, in the pouring rain. Incredible golf.

Meanwhile back at the Peggy Clark Cup, a fascinating review of past winners reveals not only Jan but Denise Cowan, Lesley Robertson (in both 2022 and 1995!) and ex-Ranfurly Castle and now Sky Sports celebrity, Iona Stephen, who won it 10 years ago this month.

RLCGA COUNTY FOURSOMES

Congratulations to Joy and Vicky who won the Renfrewshire County Foursomes yesterday at Paisley Golf Club.

27 pairs took part - coming from all over Renfrewshire - on a lovely day, on a course that was in very good condition considering the recent wet weather. Paisley is however never an easy course and Joy and Vicky must have played very well for their winning score of net 75.

They now qualify for the Inter-County Foursomes final and the Commonwealth Spoons competition in September, if they are available to play in these.

RLCGA

Renfrewshire County Golf Association held it's AGM on 1st November at Haggs Castle Golf Club.  The weather was not great and this affected the turn out on the evening but, despite that, about 40 ladies made the effort to be present.  Ranfurly Castle's Jan Macnab had a very good year and was either winner or runner up in many of the competitions.  The attached photo shows Jan with Allison Murray and the Greensomes Trophy, which they won, having played over Gourock Golf Course.  Jan and Joy formed two thirds of the Tri-am winning team, having played over Cathcart Castle in very challenging conditions. In fact, Ranfurly Castle was closed that day due to the bad weather!!

SUCCESS FOR HOME PLAYERS AT COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

The Renfrewshire Ladies County Championship was played at Ranfurly Castle this week. Thanks to Craig and the greens staff for presenting the course in such a beautiful condition to show off to our visitors.

The Championship title was ultimately won by Jennifer Rankine of Haggs Castle (handicap +1) in a close match on Friday afternoon against Julie Wilson of Williamwood. Earlier, there had been a very good showing from our ladies.

Congratulations to Jan Macnab who won the Peggy Clark Cup for the best net score (73) in Wednesday's (very windy) qualifying round, just pipping Allison Murray with the better inward half.

Then, on Friday morning, Morag Cunningham won the handicap knockout final, beating Vicky Rennie at the 18th, to win the Irvine Trophy (presented 5 years ago by our own Jean Irvine).

Well done also to Denise Cowan who reached the semi-finals of the Championship itself and to Jan and Marion who both won their first match and were knocked out in the quarter-finals.

INTER COUNTY FOURSOME FINALS

The Renfrewshire County Foursomes were played last Thursday at Bonnyton Golf Club.  It was a lovely day and several Ranfurly members were playing.  The day was won by Jan and her daughter Alison with a gross 81, net 69 - very well done.  They are now one of 4 couples who have qualified to play in the Inter County Finals tomorrow, 1st June, at East Kilbride GC.  Very best of luck to them and lets hope they have a good day in this lovely weather.

COUNTY ROSEBOWL FINAL AT GLEDDOCH

Ladies I feel slightly awkward blogging this, as it is a bit like blowing your own trumpet, but I felt you would all like to know that I played in the County Rosebowl final this afternoon and won 3&1.

The final was held at Gleddoch, arranged and refereed by County Captain June Lockhart who is a member there. My opponent was Linda MacDougall (Greenock and Kilmacolm), handicap 7 so I received 3 shots. It was a good match - I felt that I was hitting better iron shots to greens but Linda's putting was outstanding, 12 footers were practically gimmes, until she finally missed one by a whisker at the 15th.

I managed to get to 4 up after 10 holes, then Linda had 3 birdies in the next 5 holes! The match was finally over at the (pretty muddy) 17th where, after we both had to get a free drop to play our second shots, I finally holed a long putt for a birdie 4. Huge thanks to Sheila for coming to caddy for me, listening to my witterings about which irons to play and generally being a big encouragement.

I am absolutely delighted to win the trophy again for Ranfurly Castle - looking back at the trophy there have been 6 Ranfurly winners in the last 8 years - starting in 2012 with Iona Stephen (now a big-time Sky Sports presenter hobnobbing with the Solheim Cup girls but back then a Ranfurly Castle mere mortal!), then Denise won three years in a row (wow)  and last year Anne Judge won at Cathcart Castle. Whose turn could it be next year??

WOMEN'S MEDAL GRAND FINAL

Jan Macnab and Helen Abram represented Ranfurly Castle yesterday at the Scottish Golf Women's Medal Grand Final. Both had qualified for this last month playing at East Renfrewshire Golf Club.
The Grand Final was played on the Eden Course, St Andrews, on a day where the rain stayed away to let Helen finish but absolutely soaked Jan at the 17th!
No prizes for the girls but very respectable buffer zone scores for both (Helen 73, Jan 74) which placed them in the top third of competitors. The CSS was 72 with Silver Division won by a 68 and Bronze won by a staggering 62 from Margaret Adams of Gleddoch.

Congratulations to Jan and Helen as they have both qualified to play in the Grand Final, to be played on the Eden Course, St Andrews, on Sunday 16th June. Good luck girls!

ANNE AND MARION WIN COUNTY WINTER FOURSOMES

Anne Judge and Marion Munro came through an epic battle at Pollok Golf Club last Friday 8th March. They survived pretty terrible weather and a very close match to beat Jan Macnab and Sheila Shaw (Caldwell) in the Renfrewshire County Winter Foursomes Final. In a match which never saw either side more than 1 hole up, it took 22 holes to decide the winner!! Well done to Anne and Marion.
