August Update

It has been a busy month for the Ladies Section at The Castle, rounded off by a magnificent win for Europe at the Solheim Cup in the Netherlands!

Wednesday 19 August brought the annual outing of our friendly mob of kangaroos to the Ladies Section, all suitably disguised around the course, for our Australian Scramble. Eagle eyed Mary Hardie was on fine form and together with her team of Rosemary Ogilvie and Lilias Snodgrass, they spotted all 8 of our Australian visitors. Roisin Black, Pat Pennel and Carol Reid were the winning team, and the runners up were Jan Macnab, Senga Nixon and Maureen Cook. Our thanks to Lilias Snodgrass and Pamela Mackenzie for their organisation of this fun day.

The following Sunday, 23 August we enjoyed an excellent Ladies Championship Final between Defending Champion Roisin Black and Past Champion Allison Murray. Over 20 lady members, family and friends supported our accomplished finalists from the first tee. Allison won at the 17th green after a gritty performance from both players. Congratulations to Allison, commiserations to Roisin and our thanks to all those who once again supported our Championship Final.

Wednesday 26 August saw our annual friendly match between the Lady Captain and the Lady Vice Captain when Anne Judge and I competed for the Pooh Putter. Our thanks to Anne for suggesting a new format this year when all matches were competed across 18 holes and the Stableford Points were accumulated across all players to establish a winner. Thank you to all who took part and to Anne for presenting the Lady Captain with the Pooh Putter over lunch in the clubhouse.

The annual match between the Men's Captain's Team and the Lady Captain's Team, the Halden Cup, took place on Sunday 30 August and despite a valiant effort from all of the ladies, we lost out. Thank you to all the ladies who took part, and for your good grace in defeat. Methinks Anne Judge will have a different format next year....

Our Annual Outing was to East Renfrewshire Golf Club on Tuesday 1 September. I am delighted to say that 27 ladies made the trip, and, despite the dreich weather, we all enjoyed a 9-hole format followed by a lovely lunch in the clubhouse. Our thanks to Roisin's husband Ronnie Black for the very beautiful prizes, crafted from wood from the fallen trees at The Castle. Our thanks also to Anne Judge for her excellent organisation of the day. And finally, thanks to all the ladies who braved the weather, through the purchase of Bunker Passes and Mulligans, we were able to raise over £200 for SAMH, our chosen charity for the year.

On Sunday 6 September, 22 Ranfurly Castle Ladies took part in an inaugural friendly Solheim Match at Old Ranfurly with 19 ladies from Old Ran and 7 from Kilmacolm. 5 holes of 4 ball better ball, followed by 5 holes of foursomes, finishing with 5 holes of singles, with mixed teams from all clubs split into the two competing sides by handicap. Team USA prevailed in the end, and we all enjoyed warm camaraderie over afternoon tea in the clubhouse. Our thanks to May Hunter, the Lady Captain of Old Ranfurly, for her warm hospitality and tenacious organisation of our afternoon. We look forward to hosting a similar event next year with all three clubs at Ranfurly Castle, the week before the Ryder Cup on Sunday 12 September 2027.

Our Ladies Supper, which was due to take place next Sunday, we have postponed as the timing in the day was not proving popular, and instead we shall look forward as we come to the end of the season, to the Ladies Dinner on Wednesday 21 October. We shall be enjoying a starter and main course, followed by tea, coffee and tablet for £16 a head. It is always an excellent evening and a lovely opportunity to bring all of our lady members together to celebrate the season. Look out for the notice going up on the board, sign up and make your menu choices, paying Leanna at the bar.

As ever, any queries, please get in touch.

Aye,

Eleanor
